Does ChatGPT use too many hyphens?

ChatGPT hyphens compound modifiers correctly and far too often. The phrases it over-produces, when the hyphen is right, and how to cut the density safely.

Updated September 25, 2026

How this was tested

Every hyphen-variant claim here is checkable in the hyphen tool, which counts the four hyphen characters separately; paste a PDF extract and the U+2010/U+2011/U+00AD counts are what the copy is describing. The compound-adjective diagnosis is editorial, not statistical, and it is stated as one.

The short version

  • ChatGPT hyphenates compound modifiers correctly almost every time — the problem is how many nominalizations and marketing adjectives it creates in the first place.
  • A cluster of hyphens in one sentence (a "state-of-the-art, AI-driven, real-time platform") is the pattern, not the individual hyphens.
  • Deleting hyphens inside words fuses them: well-known becomes wellknown. Use the hyphen remover only on joins you actually want gone.
  • Typed -- and --- are dashes, not hyphens, and the AI dash remover treats them that way.

People notice dashes before hyphens, but a scan of model output turns up the hyphen more often. It is quieter, so it does less damage — and it is usually correct, which is what makes it hard to edit.

The question is not whether the hyphen belongs. It is whether the word pair needs to be a compound modifier at all.

First, which character are we talking about?

Three different problems get called "too many hyphens", and they need different fixes:

Why the density is high

Two mechanisms push the count up. The first is that models default to American style guidance, where a compound modifier before a noun must be hyphenated: "a well-known author", "a state-of-the-art lab". That rule is correct, and applying it consistently produces more hyphens than a human writer applying it inconsistently.

The second is that models reach for compound marketing adjectives as a substitute for a specific claim. "A high-quality, industry-leading, end-to-end solution" is four hyphens doing the work of one number, and no reviewer ever had to check it.

The phrases that give it away

These hyphenated compounds appear at model frequencies and almost never at human frequencies. None of them are wrong; all of them are checkable, and none of them survive being checked.

  • state-of-the-art, cutting-edge, best-in-class, world-class, industry-leading
  • data-driven, AI-powered, future-proof, game-changing, next-generation
  • end-to-end, one-stop, turnkey, full-service, all-in-one
  • high-quality, high-performance, low-latency, real-time, scalable
  • self-service, user-friendly, cost-effective, time-saving, value-added
  • well-known, long-term, day-to-day, step-by-step, one-size-fits-all

The substitution test

For each hyphenated phrase, ask what number or name could replace it. If the answer is nothing, the phrase is filler and should go. If the answer is a number, write the number.

When the hyphen is right and should stay

Do not "fix" correct hyphenation in the name of sounding human. Keep the hyphen when:

  • The compound comes before a noun: "a twenty-year-old building". After the noun, it opens up: "the building is twenty years old".
  • The words would otherwise be misread: re-cover and recover, co-op and coop.
  • It is a compound number: twenty-one, forty-five.
  • The prefix ends in a vowel that would collide (co-owner) or attaches to a capital or a number (pre-2000).

What you should cut is the pile-up, not the hyphen. Two hyphenated modifiers in a sentence is ordinary. Four in a row is a list of adjectives standing where evidence should be.

Cleaning hyphens without breaking words

This is the one class of dash where the default removal is genuinely destructive. Removing the hyphen from well-known gives you wellknown. The hyphen remover therefore defaults to replacing each hyphen with a space, and offers underscore and deletion for identifiers rather than prose.

  1. Decide first whether you want hyphens deleted or replaced. For prose, replaced with a space is almost always the intent.
  2. Run the hyphen counter to see the density before and after.
  3. If the text came out of a PDF, run the PDF hyphen remover, which rejoins words a page break split.
  4. For everything that is really a dash, use the AI dash remover instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use too many hyphens?

It uses them correctly and often, because it follows American compound-modifier rules consistently and reaches for hyphenated marketing adjectives in place of facts. The individual hyphens are usually right; the density comes from how many vague compound phrases it creates.

Are hyphens a sign of AI writing?

Weakly. Hyphens are ordinary punctuation and appear in any edited text. A pile of four hyphenated modifiers in a single sentence, especially marketing ones like state-of-the-art or end-to-end, is the recognisable pattern rather than hyphens in general.

How do I remove hyphens from text without joining the words?

Use the hyphen remover with "blank space" as the replacement. It turns well-known into well known rather than wellknown, which is what you want for prose. Deletion is only right for identifiers, codes and URLs.

Why does my text have hyphens that I cannot see?

Those are non-breaking hyphens (U+2011) and soft hyphens (U+00AD), which come from PDFs and formatted documents. They look identical to a normal hyphen but break search and sorting. Dedicated removers handle each one.

Should I replace hyphens with em dashes?

Only when the hyphen is standing in for a real dash between clauses, which is rare. Hyphens join words; dashes separate clauses. Swapping them blindly produces the exact over-dashed prose you were trying to avoid.
