About us
The simplest way to rid your text of dashes
Dash Remover began with a daily annoyance: text arriving from ChatGPT and word processors full of em dashes you never asked for. We built the tool we wanted to use — and have been refining it ever since.
An annoyance that deserved a tool
Dashes sneak into text from everywhere: AI models use them as an all-purpose connector, Word inserts them with AutoCorrect, and PDFs carry them disguised as near-identical look-alike characters. Fixing them by hand is tedious and find-and-replace leaves crumbs. So we built the obvious thing: a remover that clears everything in one pass, without wrecking the sentences.
Private by design, not by promise
All the work happens in JavaScript inside your browser. Your text never leaves your device: there are no servers to receive it, no logs to keep it, no accounts to tie it to you. You can go offline after the page loads and keep cleaning text without a hitch.
Details done well matter
Deleting a character is not enough. You have to tell an em dash from an en dash and a hyphen, respect the spacing around it, offer replacements that make sense (comma, colon, semicolon) and count what was found before touching anything. Every tool on this site answers a real problem someone described to us.
How the remover works
Four steps, a few seconds, zero uploads.
Paste your text
Paste the draft, the email or the chapter straight into the remover. Nothing is uploaded to any server.
Pick the dashes
Tick the types you want handled: em dash, en dash, hyphen, and typed stand-ins like -- and ---.
Choose the replacement
Space, comma, hyphen or nothing — you decide how the gap of each removed dash is filled.
Copy and move on
The cleaned text is ready to copy, with a counter of everything found and replaced.
What you will find here
Removers for every dash type
Dedicated tools for the em dash, the en dash, the hyphen and their invisible relatives, like the soft hyphen that rides along in PDF text.
Replacements with judgment
Swap an em dash for a comma, colon or semicolon — or convert hyphens to em dashes when the text needs a typographic upgrade.
A character reference
A guide to every dash character in Unicode, with code points, HTML entities and an identifier for the ones you cannot name.
In your language
The interface and guides are available in eight languages, with the same tools and the same respect for your privacy.
