The free em dash remover for every kind of text

Dash Remover is a free online em dash remover built for one job: taking the em dash (—), the en dash (–) and the hyphen (-) out of your writing. Paste a sentence, an essay, a cover letter or a whole manuscript, tick the characters you want gone, and the dashes remover cleans the text instantly — no upload, no sign-up and no word limit. Because everything runs in your browser, the em dashes remover works the same on a phone, a Chromebook or a locked-down office laptop where you cannot install software.

What makes this dashes remover different is control. A blunt delete-everything tool turns “the plan — risky as it was — worked” into unreadable soup. Here you choose the replacement first: a blank space keeps prose readable, a comma makes the sentence grammatical, a hyphen keeps ranges like 2018–2022 intact, and the custom field lets you swap dashes for words such as “and”. There is also a dedicated AI cleanup preset that removes em dashes from ChatGPT and Claude output, including typed “--” and “---” dashes that other em dash removers miss.

People arrive with all sorts of text: a cover letter that reads too dramatic, an academic paper where the style guide forbids dashes, email copy where the em dash broke a CRM import, or a transcript where every “well-known” needs its hyphen removed for a search index. The tool handles each case the same way — paste, pick, copy. Whatever the source, the cleaned text keeps its original line breaks and paragraphs, so you can drop it straight back where it came from.

How it works — remove dashes in three steps

Three steps, no upload and no account. The result updates as you change the options.

1

Paste your text

Drop in a sentence, a paragraph or a whole manuscript — or press Paste to pull in whatever is on your clipboard. This em dashes remover accepts essays, email drafts, blog posts and ChatGPT output alike.

2

Pick the dashes

Tick em dashes, en dashes, hyphens or all three. The counter beside each label shows how many the dash remover found before anything changes.

3

Choose the replacement

Swap every dash for a blank space, a hyphen, a comma or your own character. Select Nothing to delete them outright, then copy the cleaned text.

The same three steps remove em dashes from email writing, strip en dashes out of report data, or delete hyphens from a product feed. If you clean similar text every day, the popular cleanups below preload the exact settings — one click and the sample (or your own text) is processed with the right dash types and replacement already selected.

Em dash vs en dash vs hyphen — the three dashes compared

They look alike, they behave differently, and most style guides treat them very differently. Here is what each one is for — and when to remove it.

Em Dash

The longest dash. Marks asides, interruptions and unfinished thoughts. For example: The launch — delayed twice — slipped again.

U+2014

En Dash

Reads as "through" or "to" inside ranges, scores and page spans. For example: 2019–2024, pages 44–48, a 3–0 win.

U+2013

Hyphen

Joins compound words, phone numbers and negative numbers. For example: well-known, re-read, 555-0134, -12%

U+002D

Quick rule of thumb: if you can read the sentence without a pause, the dash is probably an em dash and a comma works instead; if it joins two numbers, it is an en dash and a hyphen is the safe swap; if it glues compound words together, it is a hyphen. The tool also matches the rarer members of each family, including the horizontal bar (―, U+2015), the figure dash (‒, U+2012), the Unicode hyphen (‐, U+2010) and the non-breaking hyphen (‑, U+2011), so nothing slips through when you paste from a word processor.

Why people remove dashes

Six reasons a dash cleanup shows up in an editing checklist.

  • House style guides

AP, Chicago and most newsroom desks put commas, colons or parentheses where a writer reached for a dash — so editors remove em dashes before publishing.

  • AI writing tells

The em dash is one of the most cited signals of machine-written copy, which is why writers run ChatGPT output through an AI em dash remover first.

  • Broken encodings

Renderers that expect ASCII show — or a question mark. Remove em dash characters and the formatting survives every system.

  • Spreadsheets and imports

A stray en dash quietly breaks a date range, a page span or a numeric column during a CSV import — remove en dashes first and the import is clean.

  • Voice, captions and TTS

Screen readers and text-to-speech engines read a dash as an awkward pause in the middle of a sentence.

  • Search and localisation

Mixed dash characters fragment identical strings, so a translation memory or a site search misses a match.

Working from a PDF?

The PDF Dash Remover takes a file instead of pasted text: it extracts the document, cleans every dash with the same rules, and hands you back the cleaned text in a box with a .txt download — processed entirely in your browser.

Questions

The answers to the questions we hear most. For every dash question — typing shortcuts, Mac specifics, en dash rules and more — see thefull dash FAQ.

What is a dash remover?
A dash remover is an online tool that finds dash characters in your text and replaces or deletes them. Dash Remover handles the em dash (—), the en dash (–) and the hyphen (-), so you can clean AI-written drafts, essays, email copy and documents in one paste.
How do I remove em dashes from text?
Paste the text into the tool above, keep Em dash ticked, choose what should replace it (a blank space is the most natural), and press Remove dashes. The result appears instantly — copy it back into your document.
How do I remove em dashes from ChatGPT output?
Copy the ChatGPT reply, paste it here, tick Em dash plus Match -- and ---, and run the cleanup. Typed dashes like -- are counted as em dashes, so nothing machine-written slips through. Many editors do this to every AI draft before publishing.
Is there a prompt to remove em dashes in ChatGPT?
Yes — try: "Rewrite the following without any em dashes. Replace them with commas, colons or parentheses where the sentence needs one, and never use --." Prompts are unreliable, though: the model often reintroduces dashes. Running the result through this dash remover guarantees none remain.
Can I remove em dashes in Microsoft Word?
Yes. Press Ctrl+H to open Find and Replace, type ^+ in Find what (Word’s code for an em dash), leave Replace with empty or a space, and click Replace All. Google Docs works the same way via Edit → Find and replace, searching for the — character itself.
How do I remove em dashes in Google Docs?
Open Edit → Find and replace (Ctrl+H), type or paste — into the Find box, leave Replace with blank (or a space), and press Replace all. The same search handles en dashes with – and double hyphens with --.
What is the difference between an em dash, an en dash and a hyphen?
An em dash (—) is the longest and marks an aside or a break in thought. An en dash (–) appears inside ranges such as 2018–2022 or pages 44–48. A hyphen (-) joins compound words such as well-known or cost-effective.
What can I use to replace an em dash?
The usual punctuation substitutes are the comma, the semicolon, the colon and parentheses — an em dash can replace any of them, so the reverse swap also works. When you need plain ASCII, replace em dash characters with a hyphen (-) or a blank space.
Will removing hyphens break words like well-known?
By default a hyphen glued inside a word is deleted, so well-known becomes wellknown. Choose Blank space instead if you want the words kept apart, or turn on Trim around dashes to decide the spacing yourself.
Why does an em dash sometimes show up as — or a question mark?
That is a character-encoding mismatch rather than a problem with the dash itself. Paste the text here and replace the dash with a plain hyphen or a space to make it survive every system.
Can I replace dashes with a comma or a semicolon?
Yes. Punctuation replacements hug the previous word, so "the plan — risky as it was — worked" becomes "the plan, risky as it was, worked".
Is this em dash remover free and private?
Completely. There is no account, no upload and no word limit. The whole tool runs in your browser — the text you paste never leaves your device.
Can I remove dashes from a PDF file?
Yes — that is what the PDF Dash Remover is for. Instead of pasting text, you upload the document: the page extracts it, cleans every dash family with the same rules as this tool, and hands you the cleaned text in a box with a copy button and a .txt download. It runs entirely in your browser.
